New diabetes guidance says emotional distress should be checked alongside HbA1c
New EASD guidance recommends checking diabetes distress at least annually.
It says emotional wellbeing should be considered alongside metabolic and clinical measures.
For adults with type 1 diabetes,
• CGM and
• automated insulin delivery may modestly reduce diabetes distress.
Living with diabetes means making decisions about food, glucose, medication, exercise and health every day.
New guidance argues that the emotional burden of doing that should be treated as part of diabetes care rather than an optional extra.
The European Association for the Study of Diabetes has published an evidence-based guideline specifically focused on diabetes distress in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes distress is different from clinical depression.
It describes the frustration, worry, guilt, exhaustion or sense of being overwhelmed that can come from living with and managing diabetes.
The guideline recommends that healthcare professionals ask about it using open questions about the challenges and emotional burden of living with the condition.
Crucially, the authors say diabetes distress should be assessed at least once a year.
