US study. Less than 6 hr sleep – 4 times more likely to suffer a stroke. Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Society in Boston, US.

 

US study by National Sleep Foundation, a government study  by prof Megan Ruiter, Univ Alabama in Birmingham, the lead author of the report presented today at the 26th Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Society in Boston, US.

The findings are the first to link insufficcient sleep to stroke; they are also the first to apply event o adults who have no other risk factors for stroke.


– People know how important diet and exercuise are in preventing stroke, but public is less aware of the impact of insufficient amount of sleep. 30% of US Americans have less tahn 6 h sleep per night. The number of people who report 8 h or more sleep per night has dropped from 38% in 2001 to 28% 2012.
–  Previous research has shown that sustained partial sleep deprivatiomn leads to modestly increased risk for cardiovascular event such as heart attack.

The study was a 3 year study of 5 666 adults and the results applied to those whose BMI was normal and who were at low risk for sleep apnea. An the participants had no history of stroke or cardiovascular risk factors. They self reported sleep duration and any stroke hospitalization at 6 month interval.
