This special topic collection of the June 2015 issue of Diab Care, Type 1 Diabetes at a Crossroads, includes a series of studies and a commentary focused on a wide range of issues surrounding type 1 diabetes, including: the present status of treatment methods and clinical outcomes; current concepts of pathogenesis, prediction and prevention; success and ongoing challenges of islet cell transplantation; and a pathway for advances in diabetes technology to an artificial pancreas suitable for real-world use by a large number of patients.
“Over the recent past, Diabetes Care has reported important new information regarding the burden of diabetes, prevention and screening, as well as comprehensive discussions on new therapies,” said the journal’s editor, William T. Cefalu, MD. “However, the most impressive changes in treatment and preventive strategies have been focused on type 2 diabetes.
Our editorial team wanted to be sure readers likewise had the opportunity to learn of the latest updates from studies, opinions and perspectives in the field on advances in type 1 diabetes. This special issue allows us to do that.”
