The researchers found that recurrent hypoglycemia enhances neuronal uptake of lactate that allows the brain to retain normal neural activity during hypoglycemia – in rats.Journal of Clinical Investigation April 2013

The researchers used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure the levels of blood sugar and other metabolites in the brains of rats that had recurrent episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

The researchers found that recurrent hypoglycemia enhances neuronal uptake of lactate that allows the brain to retain normal neural activity during hypoglycemia. Lactate is the metabolic end product of milk and other dairy products and is commonly called milk sugar. Exercise also produces lactate in the body.

The new research shows that the human brain uses lactate as an alternate and possibly preferential source of energy in low blood sugar events thus protecting diabetics from any added risk for dementia.
