The GAME Unit aims to elucidate the genetic and molecular basis to type 2 diabetes, CVD and related traits. The Unit specifically seeks to identify ways in which genetic and molecular information might be used to help prevent or treat these diseases.

The GAME Unit was established in August 2010, headed by Prof. Paul Franks. The Unit has around 20 members, including PhD students, post-docs, and junior faculty, as well as affiliate, visiting and part-time researchers. The GAME Unit collaborates with research institutes from around the world and members of the Unit have undertaken visiting training positions at several collaborating centres, including Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge universities and at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. These training opportunities have formed important components of doctoral and post-doctoral fellows’ training programs in the GAME Unit. The Unit’s main focus is on molecular and genetic epidemiology of type 2 diabetes, CVD and related traits. We are particularly interested in determining the synergism of genetic and non-genetic risk factors for these diseases. The Unit and its research is supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council, Novo nordisk, the Swedish Heart Lung Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, European Union (IMI), and the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
