Anna Stogianni’s 2026 doctoral thesis
Lund University focuses on the rising prevalence of diabetes in pregnancy, including Type 1, Type 2, and a special focus on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Her research highlights that GDM and high BMI significantly increase risks for pre-eclampsia, cesarean sections, and large-for-gestational-age infants, stressing the need for strict glycemic control.
Key research findings by Stogianni and colleagues include:
Risks and Outcomes: Pregnancy complications are strongly linked to obesity and rising rates of GDM, which can lead to adverse outcomes for both mother and child.
GDM Management: Women with GDM often have higher early-pregnancy BMI but may have better-controlled weight gain, though they still face higher risks of cesarean section and preterm birth.
Clinical Focus: Research indicates that intensive care and monitoring, particularly regarding BMI and glucose control, is essential for improving perinatal outcomes.
Published Studies: Her work includes studies comparing obstetric outcomes in women with GDM versus pregestational diabetes, and follow-up studies on women with newly diagnosed diabetes and a history of GDM.
The thesis, titled ”Diabetes in pregnancy, type 1, type 2 and with special focus on gestational diabetes,” is defended at Lund University on March 24, 2026.
