Hypoglycemia induced by diabetes treatment may have cardio-protective effect
While trials point to tighter glycemic control being associated with increased incidence of hypoglycemia, it is unclear if that is then leading to cardiovascular events. In fact, there is some evidence that that kind of hypoglycemia may have cardiovascular benefits. ”You would expect the stress of significant hypoglycemia would engender more mortality,” said trial investigator Dr. Mark Feinglos, a professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. ”That doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case.” ADA Diabetes Dispatch (2014)

Genomics research providing new hope for treating diabetes
Research in genomes is poised to transform how diabetes is treated. Four consortia are making progress in their findings, including one that has studied the exome data from more than 60,000 individuals. Although none of the consortia have identified specific targets for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, they do say they foresee enormous clinical payoffs down the road. ADA Diabetes Dispatch (2014)

Researchers: Exercise not one-size-fits-all in terms of benefits
Research suggests that people differ in how exercise benefits them, with one researcher saying that for some, an exercise regimen can be counterproductive. A study found that the vast majority got a lot out of exercise, but that 7% had adverse responses that actually worsened their risk profile. ADA Diabetes Dispatch (2014)

Criteria for pancreas transplants becoming more liberal
Diabetes is no longer viewed in strict terms of type 1 and type 2. ”There are people with type 1.2 or type 1.8,” said Dr. Robert J. Stratta, professor of surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Consequently, criteria for a pancreas transplant are evolving. ”At present, the only true way of establishing normal blood glucose is via pancreas transplant,” said Dr. Alexander Wiseman, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
